This article caught my eye because at Easter time two years ago I also camped at the Kosciusko National Park in New South Wales where I live. I can tell you...camping out there really is spooky, but at that time of year, the area throughout the hills is also scattered sparsely with other campers...I know...we had a bunch of about 20 of those yahoos from Melbourne camp right near us, and alot of the noises they made could have sounded much like a Yowie ROFL.
DATE : Easter 1979.
LOCATION : Mt. Kosciusko, Yarringbo Area, NSW.
TERRAIN : Mountainous white rivers.
"Mike" relays his story:-
A large group of people were camping on a hillside beside a large open creek flat. Very late one night (or early one morning), extremely powerful bellowing/wailing was heard by a friend and I (we were awoken from our sleep). The sound seemed to come from the next valley, as it was clearly very loud but reasonably distant (perhaps 1km away). The sound could be described as a screaming/bellowing noise thet reverberated clearly. It was not Dingoes, as they had visited the creek earlier that night and have a distinctly different howl. The sound was not Koalas. I have heard these nefore and it was far too loud and powerful to be Koalas. There are NO people in this area, anyway the sound was NOT human, and if it was, you would wonder why anyone would be out in the freezing cold at 3am, 50km from the closest town, bellowing! The sound was quite terrifying and heard by at least two people ( a friend and I). We lay, not moving, in our tent. It was frightning and very real. The sound grew a little louder, after a few minutes, quieter. Then it stopped and was not heard again. We did'nt mention it for fear of ridicule.
Follow up: I have since revisited this place (Easter 1995) and neither heard nor saw anything. Making more accurate observations on the second visit, the sound appeared to eminate from west of Michelago peak. In all directions from Michelago Peak, it is very rough, bush covered terrain with very few tracks at all. It is uninhabited by humans.
Comments: This area that "Mike" was in has a long history for Yowie activity from the 1800's onwards. In the early 1900's, although quite skeptical, Colonel Ryrie of Michelago asserted that during his long stay in the district he had heard many stories of the Yowies around michelago, then known as the "Jingera". He added that many people were very affraid of it. Surrounding this area, the reports are endless.
