We can easily say that Akhnaton wanted all power to return to him as it had been in the Old Empire; however, Egypt had moved forward and was not willing to accept a virtual Dictatorship. answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20091231230336AABYJTvWhy was Pharoah Akhenaten the Most Hated Figure in Ancient Egypt? Akhenaten was certainly the most hated Pharaoh by the Priesthood of Amon. They were the ones who lost their power and their enormous wealth was in danger. Akhenaton turned an insignificant Sun-God Aton into the one and only God of Ancient Egypt. This action was sacrilegious in the eyes of the priests but the common people did not particularly react negatively to this new cult, for the good reason that they had no access to the Temples of the great Gods anyway, they could not pass from the courtyard. Simple people had their house-Gods or were devoted to minor Gods of their town or Region. This was not altered in any way by the new Cult of the Sun Disc Aton. Apart from the priesthood the Aristocracy had lost a lot of their importance too. They were not close to the King anymore and therefore saw their power diminished. This of course was against their interests and therefore wanted Akhenaton removed to regain their previous status. We can easily say that Akhnaton wanted all power to return to him as it had been in the Old Empire; however, Egypt had moved forward and was not willing to accept a virtual Dictatorship.
